19 DAYS SULAWESI-HALMAHERA BIRDWATCHING PACKAGE
Day 1: ARRIVAL IN MAKASSAR.
On arrival at Makassar airport, you will be transferred to a comfortable hotel in Makassar.
For early arrivals an afternoon trip to Makassar fish ponds to watch the shorebirds, and the possibility of Savanna Nightjars hawking over the ponds at dusk. Overnight at Hotel in Makassar.
Day 2: KARAENTA TO LORE LINDU.
This morning we will drive up into limestone forest hills north of Makassar city. Karaenta Nature Reserve provides many endemics. Black-ringed White-eye, an endemic that is confined to South Sulawesi. This forest also provides a good apportunity to see some endemics like; Sulawesi Dwarf Hornbill, Piping Crow, Sulawesi Goshawk, Sulawesi Flycatcher, Ashy woodpecker and Pygmy Woodpecker. An endemic mammal here is Moor Macaque. After the morning birding in this area we will return to Makassar and take a flight to Palu in Central Sulawesi. From Palu we will drive to Wuasa, our base for birding in Lore Lindu National Park. Overnight at Sendy Homestay.
Days 3 to 5: LORE LINDU.
We will have 3 fulldays birding in this forest which offer many endemics. We will birding arround Lake Tambing and Road-side as well as climb up the Anaso trail for the Geomalia, the day roosting Diabolical Nightjar, Hylocitrea, Maroon-backed Whistler, Dark-eared Myza, Purple-bearded Bee-eater, Sombre Pigeon. Arround lakeTambing we have chance to see Piping Crows, flocks of Fiery-browed Mynas, Yellow and Green Lorikeet, Pygmy and Cerulean Cuckooshrikes, Rusty-flanked Fantail, Sulawesi Leaf-Warbler, Malia; Great Shortwing, Superb Fruit-Dove, White-bellied Imperial Pigeon, Streak-headed White-eye, Yellow-vented Whistler. We will also do one or more very early morning birding for trying to see Cinnabar Boobook. Sulawesi Thrush usually seen at dawn. Sedoa Valley is the best raptor watching opportunities in the park, with Sulawesi Serpent-Eagle, Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle, Black Eagle. Overnight at Sendy Homestay
Day 6: LORE LINDU NP TO PALU.
After a final few hours morning birding arround Lore Lindu, we will return to the Homestay for having lunch and then head back to Palu for overnight. On the way back we will stop on a place where we can see Savanna Nightjars at a roosting area that may also produce White-shouldered Triller, Lemon-bellied White-eye, and the endemic Pale-headed Munia. Overnight at a hotel in Palu.
Day 07: PALU-MANADO-KOTAMOBAGU
This morning we will depart for Manado. After arrival we will drive to Kotamobagu with with some stops enroute. We will overnight at hotel in Kotamobagu as our base for birding in Ambang Mountain and Tambun.
Day 08: AMBANG MOUNTAIN-TAMBUN.
This morning we will drive up to Sinsingon village as the closest acces to the Mountain. After meeting the Ranger we will walk up the trail to watch the main target bird in this site, The Matinan Flycatcher. We will also have chance to see Small Sulawesi and Large Sulawesi Hanging Parrot, Ornate Lorikeet, Spot-tailed Goshawk, Fiery-browed Myna. After having lunch at the Ranger house we will drive to Tambun to watch one of the famous Sulawesi bird, Maleo at its nesting ground. This site also offers some endemic such as Purple-winged Roller, Marron-chinned Fruitdove, Sulawesi Pitta, Red-backed Thrush. Overnight at hotel in Kotamobagu.
Day 09: KOTAMOBAGU-TOMOHON.
This morning we will drive to Tomohon. And if we missed the Maleo bird the day before, we will once more visit Tambun then drive to Tomohon. Overnight at Moutain Resort in Tomohon.
Day 10: TOMOHON
Birding in the morning and in the afternoon at Gunung Mahawu. Birds to see in this site are: Scaly-breasted Kingfisher, Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher, Sulawesi Myzomela, Yellow-vented Whistler, Crimson-crowned Flowerpecker, and in the evening we will observe the Speckled Boobook. Overnight at Moutain Resort in Tomohon.
Day 11: TOMOHON-TANGKOKO
In the morning we will once again birding at Mahawu Mountain before drive to Tangkoko after having lunch. We will make a stop at a view point near Tangkoko before heading to our lodge in Tangkoko. Overnight at a Lodge in Tangkoko.
Days 12-13: TANGKOKO.
This Nature Reserve is famouse for the Kingfishers such as Sulawesi Dwarf, Lilac-cheeked, Green-backed, Great-billed, and Ruddy Kingfishers. Some other endemic accurs in this site are; White-rumped and Pied Cuckoo-shrike, Sulawesi Cicadabird, White-necked Myna, Sulawesi-crested Myna, Sulawesi Scops Owl and Ochre-bellied Boobook as well as some endemic mammals; Bear Cuscus, Tarsier, Black Macaques. Sulawesi Whitish Squirel. On the boat ride to the mangrove we will see the Great-billed Kingfisher beside other birds like White-rumped Cuckoo-shrike, Great-billed Heron, Pied Imperial Pigeon. Overnight at a Lodge in Tangkoko.
Day 14: TANGKOKO-TERNATE-SUBAIM
This morning we will check out and drive to Manado airport to take a flight to Ternate. From Ternate we will cross by boat to Sidangoli. It take 25 minuts from Ternate to Sidangoli. In Sidangoli we will have lunch and then after lunch we will drive to Subaim as our base for birding in Halmahera. It will take about 4 hours to drive from Sidangoli to Subaim, therefor we will not make many stops on the way.
Day 15: GUNUNG UNI-UNI
Birding in the morning and afternoon at Uni-Uni. This site is a road-side birding. Birds to see in this site are; Moluccan King Parot, Chattering Lorry, Flame-breasted Flowerpecker, White-streaked Friarbird, Cinamon-bellied and Spectacled Imperial Pigeon. Ivory-breasted Pitta, Moluccan, and Variable Goshawk, Moluccan Scopsowl, Moluccan Boobook and other endemic birds.
Day 16: FOLI
This morning we will start the tour earlier as our main target bird in this site is the Standardwing Bird of Paradise. In this site we will also see the endemics like; Scarlet-breasted, Blue and white, and Grey-headed Fruit-dove, Paradise and Long-billed Crow, Black-chinned and Drab Whistler, Violet-necked Lory, Red-flanked Lorikeet, Moluccan Hanging parrot, Dusky Brown Oriole, Dusky Honey-eater, Great-billed Parrot, Purple Dollar Bird and others.
Day 17: GUNUNG UNI-UNI
Today we will birding again at Gunung Uni-Uni.
Day 18: SUBAIM-SIDANGOLI
This morning we will check out and drive back to Sidangoli. We will leave in the morning and birding on the way to Sidangoli. The site in Sidangoli is also good for Blue-and-white Kingfisher, Sobre Kingfisher, Moluccan Goshawk and Scarled-breasted fruit-dove if we missed in Foli and Uni-Uni.
Day 19: SIDANGOLI-TERNATE-MANADO AIRPORT.
This morning we will check out and get back to Ternate to take a flight to Manado or to the other city you will fly to.
